Hua Lijing

A contemporary artist who reconstructs traditional Chinese cultural symbols through the visual language of the digital age.

Hua Lijing is a contemporary Chinese artist whose practice explores the visual translation of traditional Chinese culture within a contemporary context. Working primarily in oil painting, he reinterprets folk beliefs, traditional patterns, religious imagery, and symbols rooted in Eastern philosophy through a structured visual language shaped by digital aesthetics and contemporary image systems.

Rather than reproducing tradition, Hua treats cultural heritage as a living source of visual and conceptual transformation. Through series such as Kui, Pattern, Light, Source, Recall, and Threshold, he combines elements derived from woodblock New Year prints, folk iconography, and symbolic motifs with the visual logic of the information age. His works create a dynamic tension between order and chaos, rationality and spirituality, tradition and future imagination.

Born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, Hua graduated from Suzhou Arts and Crafts School and later from Nanjing University of the Arts with a specialization in Decorative Arts. A Senior Arts and Crafts Master, he has served as Deputy Director of the China Academy of Arts and Crafts, Director of the Suzhou Taohuawu Woodblock New Year Pictures Society, and Director of the Suzhou Taohuawu Woodblock New Year Pictures Research Institute. He currently lives and works in Suzhou.
